Wayfarer Yacht Corporation of Costa Mesa, CA, produced the Islander line (including the Islander 21 shown here), the Bahama 24 (page 316), and others. The company was started by Buster Hammond, owned for a while by Cosmodyne and by Radion, and after a struggle to save it, went bankrupt in 1987. We have no accommodations plan to show here, but her pro motional literature says she "is equipped with four full-length berths, galley, unusual dinette arrangement, modem head, and plenty of storage lockers." That sounds good to us. The purported 1,000 pounds of ballast seems unusually large—more than half the total weight of the boat—leaving only 950 pounds for the hull, deck, rig, etc. That makes us wonder whether the numbers given in ads are incorrect. (For comparison, this boat's comps have weights excluding ballast as follows: Cal 20, 1,050 pounds; Ranger 22, 1,282 pounds.) Best and worst features: Not enough information available to comment.

This sleek-looking boat was designed by the well-known Bruce Kirby (Laser, Nightwind 35, Sonar, etc.). The sales brochure says she is intended "for MORC competition, IOR Mini-Ton level racing, and as a yacht club one-design." She had some racing successes in Long Island Sound in her first year, but for some reason not many units were sold, perhaps because the marketers appeared not to push the boat's possibilities as a pocket cruiser. In fact, neither her ads nor her brochure shows her layout below—so we don't, either, having no details to pass on. But personally, we think she's very good-looking, and knowing that other Kirby designs are almost always good sailors' boats, we have a warm feeling about this one. Too bad they never really caught on. Best and worst features: Not enough information available to comment.
