The harbour can be entered in any conditions though the approach between Tarifa and Punto dc Malabata is very difficult in strong W wands. Approach from the W is assisted by the unmistakable sight of Cap Spartel also known as Cabo Espartel and Cape Spartan and its lighthouse. From the E, the steep headland of Punta de Malabata with its lighthouse provides a good landmark.

The starboard entrance pier is Spanish and the port side is part of the Moroccan port of Nador, hence the unique peculiarity of the entrance. Coastline from Jorf Lasfar to Safi
This coastline is rocky, with long stretches of low-lying cliffs and 50 foot sand dunes. A large inland lake and connecting lagoon lie behind dunes near Oualidia. Ncaring Cap Cantin Beddouza , 7M to the north, the white mosque of Sidi Bou Seksou is conspicuous.
